Will Kaufman may have written the year’s most important book on the subject of music. His latest work “explores songs from all genres that respond to war, racism, sexism, terrorism, the climate emergency, and political oppression: including the crisis of Trumpism itself.” Of particular interest is the final chapter, “Wrecking Ball,” in which Kaufman examines the songs and musicians that have provided the soundtrack to the U.S.A.’s recent descent into authoritarianism. P!nk, Joan Baez, and Macklemore all get a mention, among many others, and Kaufman’s book is essential reading.
