Album Review: The Word - Soul Food (10/10)

VZCD125Robert Randolph and John Medeski once again team up with the Mississippi All Stars for a New York meets Memphis throwdown. Imagine if Booker T. were jamming with the Allmans and then attended church with the Staple Singers; that would be a party, right? Tracks like “Glory, Glory” are appropriately reverent and transformative, while more secular tunes (“Play All Day,” “You Brought the Sunshine”) move the spirit as well as the feet. Randolph’s gritty riffs and Medeski’s funky keyboard atop a killer rhythm section make for a welcome and inspiring combination. – Eric A. Harabadian
