Slowcore icon Hannah Marcus conveys a series of complex feelings and experiences via gothic ambient melodies and folk-like orchestral textures in this long-awaited album recorded between 2004 and 2010. Tracks like “A Virgin Graveyard” and “A Sweeter Way to Say Goodbye” utilize layered harmonies and whimsical instruments to invoke a feeling of lost souls during a bleak winter. Marcus doesn’t need to hide behind catchy earworms to make her point and that’s part of what makes the album so great.
