Alessa Ray has a persona that’s vigorous and feisty, pushing her trained voice to heights that less confident singers avoid. “Mamacita” is a tale of seduction and betrayal sung in both English and Spanish and is a solid singer-with-dancers workout. “Shy Guy” is driven by a biting, funky guitar
and gets to its chorus in a hurry. We like the angelic interlude and the catchy lyrics. It’s probably her most satisfying, appealing song. “You Do” has a lighter, acoustic guitar set-up and emits a sweet, airy vibe. She loses us, though, with the song’s soprano/falsetto segments that come off a bit more
goofy than intended. Overall we feel that this artist should work harder to be more about authenticity than artifice.
