Singer-songwriter Maia Sharp told us about her love for her Neumann M149 microphone.
Maia Sharp: My favorite piece of gear is my Neumann M149 microphone. I've recorded all of my vocals on it for my last four albums and every song in between. It's mostly transparent but with a subtle boost of air that my voice needs. Somehow, though, it works on every voice that comes through my studio no matter how different they are from each other.
It helps me counterbalance my voice's heavy low mids without putting a high mid fang on someone else with a naturally brighter voice. It's especially joyful through my Portico 5012 pre but even when I travel with it and run it straight through my RME Babyface interface (also a decent pre) it still sounds great.
I've also used the M149 on cello, flugelhorn, saxophone, violin, high strung acoustic guitar and random homemade percussion and it's never come up short.
Maia Sharp's Tomboy album is out now.
