Katy Perry said it best with “Hi, neighbors!” and described One Love Malibu as an intimate barbecue with the locals of The Bu. One Love Malibu at King Gillette Ranch on Dec. 2 brought together many major artists and celebrities, most of whom are Malibu residents and a few that even lost their homes including Robin Thicke and members of Katy Perry and Alanis Morissette’s band. Legendary special guests included Dick Van Dyke and hanging out backstage throughout the day was longtime Bowie collaborator and pianist Mike Garson who was a fire victim himself. Linda Perry put together the outstanding lineup and appeared onstage beginning to end to announce performers. Special guest announcers included Johnny Galecki, Demi Moore and Van Dyke who stated, “I’m here to represent the old people.”
After Katy Perry’s epic performance, she graciously wondered the ranch greeting fans and watched other performers including Alanis Morissette and Gwen Stefani. For those who wanted the ultimate experience, there were several airstreams available for $30,000 each which were all sold out. All together this event raised over $2,000,000 for those affected by the Woolsey fire, one of the worst brush fires in American history. Christie's put together the auction for the event which raised close to $1,000,000 and included a motorcycle riding experience with actor Orlando Bloom which Perry won for $50,000 since she didn’t want anyone else riding with her man. Festival-goers’ afternoon grub included Nobu and Malibu Burger Co, both whom who were sponsors of the benefit. Although the day started out on the warmer side, when nightfall hit, concert-goers started gathering around heaters and by the time Macy Gray who was the final act took the stage temperatures were under 50 degrees which for L.A. is very cold.
