Country icon Willie Nelson and 27 time Grammy winner Allison Krauss played the Pacific Amphitheater at the OC Fair on Aug. 9. Just a year ago, I saw Nelson at the Shrine Auditorium with Kacey Musgraves opening. At 7:30 p.m. Krauss took the stage. When Krauss won her first Grammy, in 1991, she was the second youngest winner in Grammy history at the time. Overall Krauss has received 42 nominations and has the 2nd most Grammy wins for a recipient still living. Krauss’ set included “Baby, Now That I’ve Found You,” “Angel Flying to Close to the Ground,” “Stay” and “River in The Rain.”
Willie Nelson, now 85, has a career that spans over six decades and is one of the last of his kind from a generation including Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and George Jones. Nelson’s set included a mix of covers and his own classics like “Georgia On My Mind,” “On the Road Again,” “If You Got the Money” and “Always on My Mind." Nelson brought a very big surprise guest for “I Will Be Your Fool,” and it was none other than actress/singer Jessica Simpson. This was Simpson’s first ever performance in front of her kids and first time performing live in several years. There was another guest appearance for “I’ll Fly,” which was Krauss along with her family and band. If you’re in the LA area and missed this show Willie Nelson will be playing the Hollywood Bowl on Oct. 21 for his Outlaw Music Festival.
