“On Air The Triumph and Tumult of NPR”

Fascinating, revelatory, and irresistibly dishy, this is a riveting account of NPR’s unlikely launch, chaotic ascent, and ultimate triumph.

An “engrossing and entertaining…major work of media history” that reveals the unlikely story of one of America’s most celebrated but least understood media empires.  (The New York Times Book Review)

At 16, John Badanjek, known as Johnny Bee, drummed for Motor City’s premier rock band, Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels. He delivered one of rock’s greatest drum breaks, according to Rolling Stone Magazine.

After the band disbanded in 1967, ”Bee" toured and recorded with Edgar Winter, Alice Cooper, Dr. John, Bob Seger, Ronnie Montrose, Nils Lofgren, and others, providing the backbeat for some of rock's legendary tracks.

In 1972, he co-founded The Rockets, showcasing his songwriting skills. He served as drummer and lead vocalist until 1976.

Bee’s songs propelled the group to national prominence and consistently charted on the pop music charts (“Can’t Sleep,” “Turn Up the Radio,” “Takin’ It Back”).

UPIKO - Originally from Yamaguchi, Japan, UPIKO moved to Tokyo in November 2020 to pursue her music career.

She began posting original songs and covers on TikTok and YouTube, using only her voice and acoustic guitar. Her lyrics—often addressing the emotions of struggling youth and reflecting timely issues like online harassment and global conflict—combined with her powerful vocals and emotional expression, quickly garnered widespread attention and a rapidly growing fan base

In January 2024, her song “CROW (Karasu)” received international acclaim, resulting in a surge of performance invitations from both domestic and overseas festivals.

She has since appeared at major events across Europe and Southeast Asia.

With her distinctive songwriting style and genre-defying approach, UPIKO is now recognized as one of the most promising emerging artists of 2025!
