Dan Elektro, drummer with veteran garage rockers The Woggles, told us about his love for a classic Ringo beat...
Dan Elektro: There is, of course, a multitude of drummers and drum beats that blew my mind that I could write about but I have to choose one. So, I choose the first drummer whose name and face that I knew, Ringo Starr. I became fascinated with the differences in Ringo’s drumming in the studio vs. live after being gifted The Beatles' Anthology 1, in particular the drumming on “I Saw Her Standing There” that was recorded live in Stockholm.
After decades of hearing the studio version of this song with the bass drum barely audible, if it all, I was amazed by the way Ringo delayed the snare and altered his bass drum pattern just before the band goes into the chorus. It creates tension, excitement, an expectation that something is about to change. So, I’ve done what most any other drummer would’ve done. I’ve appropriated the idea! Thanks, Ringo!
