The Best Gig I Ever Saw: US3 Digs Bowie

Geoff Wilkinson of US3 told us about his Bowie experience...

Geoff Wilkinson: Without a doubt one of the best gigs I ever saw was the first time I saw David Bowie. It was June 15, 1978 at Newcastle City Hall, and I was an impressionable and excited teenager.

He hadn’t toured for quite a few years at that stage, and the band performed 2 sets, the first set comprising of tracks from “Heroes,” “Low,’ and “Station To Station.” I remember a blistering version of the title track from the latter album, one of my favorite tracks. Bowie always had a thing about guitarists, and the dual guitar frontline was made up of Carlos Alomar and Adrian Belew. I don’t remember the full line-up, but the rhythm section was definitely long time Bowie collaborators George Murray (bass) and the legendary Dennis Davis (drums).

When the band came out for the second set it surprised everyone what happened next. They tore into six songs in a row from the Ziggy Stardust album without stopping for breath, the whole crowd was going absolutely nuts. Including me!

An unforgettable experience--I’ve still got my ticket for the gig [pictured].

US3's "Resist the Rat Race" is out now. The new album is out August 22.
