The Bass Line That Blew My Mind: Sparta Gets The Cure

The Cure

"The Kiss"

Matt Miller of alt-rock vets Sparta told us about his love for a Cure bass lick...

Matt Miller: Before I started playing music, pre-high school, I was a full-blown Skate Rat. Listening to music and skateboarding was my entire existence, and The Cure’s album, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, was on full rotation. A few years later, it wasn’t until I was in my first band that it dawned on me how important and how difficult it was to develop your own sound and tone.

I know that a lot of it comes from trying your best to coax what’s in your head through your fingers and through your instrument to the outside world. So it was during that time I started revisiting past favorite albums.

The intro track, "The Kiss," hit me differently — the sound, dissonance, and weird phrasing opened my mind to how far you can make your sound go and still be melodic and beautiful. This song exemplifies Simon Gallup's exciting approach to playing bass.

Sparta's album Cut A Silhouette is out now.
