As spooky season comes to a close, Sound System is not done feeling fiendish. Many of us seek to maintain the drama and darkness that still lingers; sounds of dread and decadence feel apropos about now. It is Day of the Dead, after all. This week's playlist illustrates an atmospheric setting: think a vampiric mansion and a chilling murder mystery. Dark red velvet, melting candles, stained glass windows, and deceitful plot twists are evoked via classic tracks from The Beatles and Queen, which lay the groundwork with their haunting use of violin and piano. The Caretaker and Ella Fitzgerald aid in conjuring a ghostly Art Deco vibe, but there's some modern energy as well. It wouldn't be a mansion party without dancing, and the bouncy beats of Lady Gaga, Depeche Mode, and MGMT will satisfy your craving for movement, mystery and mayhem.
