Currently on tour in support of his latest album release, Paul, R&B/Adult Contemporary recording artist PJ Morton performed for a sold-out audience at LA’s Belasco Theater on Friday night. Enduring a lengthy intermission following two opening acts, the frenzied impatient crowd erupted with thunderous applause, screams and whistles as Morton and his band came on stage. Immediately launching into a 75-minute set, Morton was in total command from the opening note, visibly feeding off the enthusiasm of the crowd. A natural showman with a soulful voice reminiscent of the Philly sound of the '70s, Morton had fans on their feet grooving to every beat.
He featured selections off his latest album including the singles “Ready” and “Say So,” which prompted a guest appearance by vocalist JoJo. “Say So” has been on the Urban AC (adult contemporary) radio charts for 28 weeks and counting, and is up for Best Collaboration at the Soul Train Awards. Based on tonight’s performance, and the fan adulation he received, Morton has solidified his standing as a solo artist on his way to stardom.
Morton first gained notoriety in 2010 as a touring keyboardist for Maroon 5, working alongside band member and fellow keyboardist Jesse Carmichael. He became an official member of Maroon 5 in 2012. The same year, he released his debut solo EP, Following My First Wind. In 2013, Morton released his major-label debut album, New Orleans. His self released 2017 studio album Gumbo, earned Morton Grammy nominations for Best R&B Album and Best R&B Song.
Morton’s tour continues throughout the U.S. and abroad through the end of January 2020.
