My Favorite Album: KATiiE Loves Lianne La Havas' Blood

Lianne La Havas

Blood (Warner Bros/Nonesuch)

Brooklyn-based indie pop artist KATiiE told us about her love for a Lianne La Havas gem.

KATiiE: When I was 19, I came across the album “Blood” by Lianne La Havas. I was immediately in awe of Liannes vocal power, her vulnerability, and her storytelling. That album has incredible range. It takes you from massive, epic, atmospheric anthems, to feeling like Lianne is sitting right next to you whispering in your ear, telling you about her heartbreak.

There are themes in “Blood” such as finding yourself, connecting to your culture, solitude, love, goodbyes. I was dealing with my own version of a lot of these themes at the time, and this album became a refuge for me. To this day when I need to feel grounded, I play that album.

My favorite songs are “Tokyo”, and “Wonderful”. I remember taking a solo road trip to Seattle, (one of the longest trips I had taken alone so far at the time), and listening to “Tokyo” realizing how being alone can create this energy and excitement. It can feel a little melancholic too, but it also generates this feeling of endless possibilities and opportunities.

“Wonderful”, also has my heart. It’s so beautifully intimate, heartbreaking, and tender. There’s all this open space in the production, and every note is played or sung with such intent and purpose. So so bittersweet.

And that’s my 10/10 album!

KATiiE's EP Fallout is out September 26. The "Two Ways" single is out now.
