Lisa Mathews of Baltimore band Love Riot told us about her love for Creampuff...
Lisa Mathews: Let’s get one thing straight from the start: I’m not the world’s best guitarist, but nobody has more fun playing. I love my guitars and pedals, and though I can’t talk technically about what they do, I like the sounds they help me get. I go for a warm sound, so my stage guitar is a 1982 Ibanez Artist. I named her “Creampuff” when I bought her from a tiny music store in Baltimore back in 1995. She’s got this buttery sparkle finish, like ivory over gold. For rehearsing with Love Riot, I play my ’96 MIJ Shell Pink Strat “Pinky.” Pinky is a lot lighter than Creampuff, good for long rehearsals.
As for my pedalboard, I have a power supply, a delay unit I keep on almost all the time, an EQD Astral Destiny that gives me that shimmery sound when I need it on a couple solos, a NU-X Morning Star that gives me a slight boost and crunch and an MXR Raijin Drive. I know one’s overdrive and one’s distortion, but onstage I just think of them as GET LOUD and GET LOUDER. That’s pretty much it. Anything else wouldn’t fit, and would be too much to think about. I’ve got a lot of words to remember, and singing to do.
Love Riot's album Nothing Is Etched in Stone is out now.
