Studios For Schools, started by musician Scott Montoya and operated with his father, helps design and build music and film production studios in low-income schools. In addition, they help teach recording and engineering basics, performance skills, and creative techniques. The non-profit also plans to launch scholarship and intern placement programs for sound engineering and film production.
To help fund the non-profit, an auction has gone live that includes rarities from John Lennon & Yoko Ono, Jack White, Bon Iver, Nirvana, Mastodon, Third Man Records, Merge Records, Sub Pop Records and many more. Studios For Schools reached out to artists and labels like Black Keys, Ian Mackaye, Tony Hawk, Volcom, Burger Records and Suicide Squeeze Records to donate collectible and autographed items to auction off on eBay, with 100% of the proceeds going towards the schools. One of the first auctions to go up online comes courtesy of the jagged garage punks the Coathangers.
Studios For Schools is important organization for guitarist/vocalist Julia Kugel, who comments, “This is a unique opportunity for us to raise awareness and money for this cause. I have personally been to the studio they are building at Santiago High School in Garden Grove, CA and have worked with the kids there. It’s amazing to see the lights going off in their heads!”
