beyerdynamic Unveils DT 990 PRO X – A Modern Take on the Studio Classic

For over a century, beyerdynamic has been setting the bar for audio excellence. Founded in 1924 and based in Heilbronn, Germany, the company has long been known for its precision-engineered headphones, microphones, and audio gear—most of which are still designed and handmade in-house.

Now, the company is turning the page on one of its most iconic products with the release of the DT 990 PRO X.

Originally launched in the 1980s, the DT 990 PRO has been a staple in studios around the world, lauded for its detail, comfort, affordability, and long-lasting build. Used by artists and producers such as Flume, Martin Garrix, and Metro Boomin, it’s become a go-to tool for audio professionals. The newly released DT 990 PRO X builds on that legacy while addressing the evolving needs of today’s creators.

A statement from the company reveals that the new model includes “a detachable cable, advanced comfort, powerful STELLAR.45 driver system and lower impedance rating that allows for better performance across a wide range of devices.” With a 48-ohm impedance, the DT 990 PRO X works seamlessly across playback systems—whether in a fully equipped studio or a compact mobile setup.

As an open-back headphone designed for critical listening, the DT 990 PRO X offers an expansive soundstage that complements studio monitors, helping engineers and producers zero in on every detail in their mix. “Most at-home producers have studio monitors that they use to listen back to their mixes,” said Kevin Nietsch, Product Manager at beyerdynamic. “With the DT 990 PRO X, we wanted to create a tool that modern studio professionals didn’t already have. The DT 990 PRO X headphones are engineered to magnify subtle mix imperfections that might otherwise go unnoticed—a true companion for studio monitors.”

At the heart of the headphone is beyerdynamic’s STELLAR.45 driver system, made in Germany and capable of delivering a wide frequency response of 5 to 40,000 Hz. The result is a clear, dynamic, low-distortion listening experience across the spectrum.

Recognizing the long hours that often come with audio work, beyerdynamic has focused on comfort just as much as performance. The DT 990 PRO X features ultra-soft velour ear cushions and an ergonomically padded headband that reduces pressure during extended use. The detachable 3-meter mini-XLR to 3.5mm cable (with a 6.3mm adapter included) adds practical flexibility, while the use of serviceable components ensures the headphone’s longevity.

“The release of the DT 770 PRO X and DT 990 PRO X marks a new chapter for beyerdynamic—one where we’re adapting to the needs of the constantly evolving music production landscape,” Nietsch continued. “We’re proud to serve the next generation of studio professionals and creators by continuing to release products that align with these needs.”

The DT 990 PRO X is available now for $199 USD through beyerdynamic.com and authorized retailers. Each pair comes with a detachable cable, adapter, and a drawstring carry bag—everything needed to get started right out of the box.
