Apple Music Launches DJ Mixes in Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos

Apple Music has launched DJ mixes in Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, bringing fans into a truly immersive audio experience with multidimensional sound and clarity. The arrival of Spatial Audio is a natural next step in Apple Music’s commitment to sound and DJ mixes following last fall’s launch of a new program allowing for proper identification and compensation of the creators involved in the creation of mixes.

Detroit techno pioneer, DJ, and producer Jeff Mills will kick things off with an exclusive hour-long mix inspired by the cosmos mixed in Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos. Titled 'Outer to Inner Atmosphere: The Escape Velocity Mix', the set also officially relaunches Apple Music's acclaimed One Mix series — a showcase of the world’s best DJs and producers in the mix. New mixes will be added monthly moving forward as more of dance and electronic music's finest DJs helm One Mix with Dolby Atmos.

"The response to Spatial Audio from both subscribers and creators has been incredible, and we’re thrilled to expand this innovation in sound,” said Stephen Campbell, Apple Music's Global Head of Dance and Electronic Music. “It’s an honor to have Jeff Mills create our first One Mix in Spatial Audio. He is a generational icon and a true techno pioneer that has taken the concept to a dimension further than we could have dreamt with 'Outer to Inner Atmosphere: The Escape Velocity Mix.“

“The purpose of this recording was conceptualized and designed to stimulate the listeners’ three dimensional senses and sensations using the subject and idea of breaking Earth’s gravitational pull and leaving the planet. The embarkment to a place outside and unlike our own,” said Jeff Mills. “With this immersive sound experience also came certain aspects that needed to be addressed. Ones that uses our psychological responses, like anticipation and mystery, the risks and danger of such a journey and most importantly, the translation of the feeling that ‘a step forward’ has been taken.”

Spatial Audio is a revolutionary, immersive audio experience that enables artists to mix music so the sound comes from all around and from above. By default, Apple Music will automatically play Dolby Atmos tracks on all AirPods and Beats headphones with an H1 or W1 chip, as well as the built-in speakers in the latest versions of iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Apple Music adds new Dolby Atmos tracks constantly and offers songs in Spatial Audio from some of the world’s biggest artists and music across all genres, including hip-hop, country, Latin, pop, and classical. Apple Music is working with artists and labels to add new releases and the best catalog tracks, as more artists begin to create music specifically for the Spatial Audio experience. Together, Apple Music and Dolby are making it easy for musicians, producers, and mix engineers to create songs in Dolby Atmos.
