Vinyl Minded with We Contain Multitudes

We Contain Multitudes

Minako (Expert Work Records)

Right from the off, it's clear that this isn't going to be a normal listening experience. From the ball on the sleeve that appears to actually be emitting heat somehow, to the fact that the vinyl is really fucking weighty, to the mention of the often-dreaded words "math-rock" in the press release, to the fact that side A of four sides has just one song on it (the title track). We're obviously in for a ride.

As it happens, Minako offers a proper experience. This is a psychedelic magic carpet ride that takes in all sorts of weird directions to all sorts of wonderful places.

"We Contain Multitudes, a heavy psych-rock instrumental trio consisting of ex-Bitch Magnet members Jon Fine (guitar, keyboards) and Orestes Morfín (drums) with Simon Kobayashi (bass), announce their debut record, Minako," the press release tells us. "Arriving June 25, 2025, via Expert Work Records, the album was recorded by Abe Seiferth (Car Seat Headrest, Nation Of Language) and produced by Seiferth and the band."

“You would not believe how many guitar tracks—and how many different guitars—are on 'Can We Just Not?' Abe Seiferth did an unbelievable job in making it all cohere. The groove that Simon and Orestes came up with kills me—and, God, I love that ending so much," said Jon Fine in a statement.

Look, this album isn't for everyone. The songs are instrumental, and they're extremely experimental. There are hints of melody in there, but you have to dig deep and work hard. But the effort, for those inclined, is well worth it.
