USC Thornton School of Music Seeks Full-Time Instructional Faculty in Music Industry

The University of Southern California Thornton School of Music has opened applications for a faculty position in Music Industry in the Division of Contemporary Music. This is a full-time, instructional faculty appointment, starting on August 16, 2018. Rank of appointment will be determined based on qualifications. This is an instructional faculty position and is not eligible for consideration for tenure.

The USC Thornton Music Industry program prepares students to succeed in a rapidly evolving industry that is largely rooted in the Los Angeles area. The program combines classroom study with technical instruction and hands-on experience for those seeking a career in the music business. The program offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Industry, a Music Industry undergraduate minor, and will launch a new Master of Science degree in Music Industry in Fall 2018. As part of the Division of Contemporary Music, the Music Industry program has wide-ranging interdisciplinary and collaboration opportunities with the Jazz, Screen Scoring, Popular Music, Music Technology and Guitar programs.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success as a leader in the music industry, as well as teaching experience in the higher education, continuing education, or executive education environment. The candidate should have well-established and powerful relationships in the music business community. Additionally, the candidate should possess expertise in current music industry trends, data analytics, marketing, entrepreneurship and/or management. The candidate will have excellent communication skills, be a strong collaborator, and fully embrace the mission of the Thornton School and Division of Contemporary Music. Principal duties will include classroom teaching at the graduate and undergraduate level; mentoring of students on career-related issues; serving the program in faculty meetings; participating on School of Music and/or University committees; and liaising, connecting and advocating for the Thornton School externally to opinion makers and leaders in the music industry.

Minimum qualifications: a Bachelor’s degree, seven years of professional music industry experience, and demonstrated record of successful teaching.

Preferred qualifications: an advanced graduate degree, ten or more years of professional music industry experience at the management or leadership level, and three or more years of university-level teaching.
