Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to Expand to Japan

As part of a larger initiative to expand its mission to engage, teach and inspire through the power of rock and roll, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has entered into a license agreement to create the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Japan. The inaugural exhibition will open in Tokyo in September 2017. A permanent space will open at a later date featuring content as well as traveling exhibits from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s traveling exhibits are popular throughout the United States. In the past year, some of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s exhibits showcased have included:

  • Louder Than Words: Rock, Power & Politics: From the moment rock and roll hit the airwaves, it’s played a crucial role in politics and social movements around the world. This exhibit celebrates the power of rock to change attitudes about peace, equality, patriotism and hope.
  • Paul Simon: Words and Music: Walks fans through the personal story of Simon’s life and creative process featuring candid commentary from Simon himself.
  • Herb Ritts: The Rock Portraits: In the first collection of the photographic portraits of musicians, we see how Ritts created the definitive images of icons the likes of David Bowie, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Cher and Madonna.
  • Common Ground: The Music Festival Experience: Takes an immersive and engaging look at music festival culture. More than outdoor concerts, this exhibit highlights the community experience.

“Rock and roll is a universal language and this is an incredible opportunity for us to collaborate with the Japan Project Production Committee to deliver an exciting experience internationally,” said Greg Harris, president and CEO of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. “Japan is the second-largest music market in the world, making it the perfect place for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s first international expansion.”

In addition to the traveling exhibits and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Japan, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has amplified the visitor experiences at its Cleveland museum. New exhibits, new visitor engagement initiatives, live music and a new café are a part of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s transformation, the largest in its 21-year history, which has resulted in double-digit growth over the past two years.
