Muse bring together the sounds of Queen, Zeppelin, Guns N’ Roses and even Faith No More… and guess what? It’s fucking awesome. “Supremacy” kicks the concept off with a post-war montage vibe before transitioning to a jam James Bond would rock in his Q-altered iPod. “Survival,” the 2012 London Olympics anthem, shows their appreciation for Freddie Mercury while “Big Freeze” reminds us of Tommy. Muse didn’t invent dubstep, but they sure as hell make it accessible in “Follow Me”—and more aggressively on “Unsustainable.” Bassist Chris Wolstenholme got a crack at songwriting on “Save Me” and “Liquid State” and, while well-written, feels like it should have been a side project.
