Album Review: Angus & Julia Stone - Self Titled

Angus & Julia Stone

It’s never been about being the catchiest. For this Australian duo the songwriting has always focused on subtlety and tonality. On this, their third full-length, brother and sister Angus & Julia Stone team with Rick Rubin (Chili Peppers, Jay Z), adding a few new sketches to the blueprint, but overall remaining consistent to original form. Angus brings a more Petty-esque vibe to his vocals, while Julia tones down the “child-like” side of her whispers. Just like earlier releases, the more you listen, the more you fall in love. Standouts include summer groove “Grizzly Bear” and the bluesier “Crash and Burn.” – Andy Mesecher
